R-410A PHASEOUT---CHANGES IN THE REFRIGERANT INDUSTRY
2024-03-19

You may already know that your air conditioner requires "Freon" to work. From the 1990s until the mid-2010s, R-22 refrigerant was our first choice. R-410A has become a popular refrigerant after the news of the phaseout of R-22 starting in 2020. If you've been paying attention to environmental regulations, you may have noticed that R-410A is also starting to be phased out. Just as R-22 will not be permanently banned in 2020, R-410A will not suddenly disappear in 2022. We will discuss what will happen to R-410A in the future and what kind of replacements there will be.

The rise and elimination of r-410a

R410A is a new type of environmentally friendly refrigerant that does not damage the ozone layer. When cooling or heating, the working pressure is about 1.6 times than R22 air conditioners, and the cooling (warming) efficiency is higher. Improve air conditioning performance without destroying the ozone layer. R410A new refrigerant is composed of two quasi-azeotropic mixtures, mainly composed of hydrogen, fluorine and carbon elements (expressed as HFC). It is stable, non-toxic and has superior performance. At the same time, because it does not contain chlorine, it will not react with ozone, that is, it will not destroy the ozone layer. In addition, air conditioners using new refrigerants will also have certain improvements in performance. R410A is internationally recognized as the most suitable refrigerant to replace R22, and is popular in Europe, the United States, Japan and other countries.

The ODP of R-410A is 0.  Although R-410A does not deplete the ozone layer, it is still not good for the environment.  In terms of global warming potential (GWP), it's actually on par with R-22.   Therefore, in order to slow down the rate of global warming, R410a is bound to be eliminated and replaced by more environmentally friendly refrigerants.

Which refrigerant can we expect?

R410a is currently a widely used air-conditioning refrigerant. Its future trend may be affected by environmental protection policies and be gradually phased out and replaced by more environmentally friendly refrigerants. At present, many air conditioning manufacturers have begun to gradually replace R410a with more environmentally friendly refrigerants, such as R32 and R290, as well as the emerging HFO refrigerant gas R1234yf. These refrigerants cause less damage to the ozone layer and comply with environmental protection requirements. In addition, with the development of technology, the energy efficiency ratio (EER) and environmental load (EER) of air conditioning systems are continuously optimized, which also provides better conditions for the replacement of refrigerants.

So, what do we do now?

Refrigerants aren't suddenly going to become illegal or obsolete, so there's no need to worry about R-410A right now. However, SHINGCHEM has been following changes in the HVAC and refrigeration industry to provide new environmentally friendly refrigerants, and will not give up providing R410A refrigerants.
