GUIDANCE FOR CHANGES TO THE USE OF R404A- WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
2019-12-10

The F-Gas Regulations are having an increasing effect on the way the refrigeration industry works. As of 1st January 2020, legislative changes will see the end of virgin refrigerants with a GWP of 2500 or greater being used in new installations. Maintenance is also affected as systems with a charge size of 40T CO2 equivalent or greater can no longer be serviced using virgin material with this ‘high’ GWP.

Existing Equiment:

With a GWP of 3922, R404A can no longer be used to service and maintain refrigeration equipment where the charge size is greater than 40 Tonnes of CO equivalent (approximately 10kgs of R404A).

New Equipment:

From the 1st January 2020 new stationary refrigeration equipment cannot be installed using R404A.

Your Options:

If the system charge is above 40 Tonnes of CO equivalent (approximately 10kgs of R404A) use Reclaimed R404A (applicable until 2030). If a system has a charge size below this threshold you can continue to use virgin R404A.
