“The most stringent in history” new air conditioning regulations

On July 17, according to foreign media reports, a report jointly issued by the United Nations Environment Programme and the International Energy Agency (IEA) pointed out that if the world takes coordinated actions to promote the transformation of energy-saving and climate-friendly refrigeration, the next 40 years will be Avoid up to 460 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

The “Refrigeration System Emissions and Policy Comprehensive Report” stated that the signatories of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol reached an agreement to gradually reduce the production and use of the powerful greenhouse gas HFCs. It is expected to avoid a temperature increase of 0.4°C before 2100.

The Montreal Protocol was signed in Montreal, Canada on September 16, 1987, and entered into force in 1989. The implementation of the protocol has gradually reduced the use of ozone-depleting chemicals in refrigerators, air conditioners and many other products by 99%.

On January 1, 2019, the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol entered into force. By gradually reducing the use of powerful greenhouse gas hydrofluorocarbons, the “Amendment” is expected to continue to protect the ozone layer while avoiding global warming of more than 0.4°C by the end of this century.

The “Comprehensive Report on Refrigeration System Emissions and Policies” released today emphasizes the importance of refrigeration to maintain people’s health, but the report also points out that the increasing demand for refrigeration has also led to a rapid deterioration of climate change. This is because most of the energy that powers air conditioners and other refrigeration equipment is based on fossil fuels, and the hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide and black carbon they emit are the driving forces of global warming.
The report points out that there are currently an estimated 3.6 billion refrigeration equipment in use worldwide. If refrigeration services are provided for everyone who needs refrigeration, by 2050, as many as 14 billion refrigeration equipment will be needed globally.

The International Energy Agency estimates that if the energy efficiency of air conditioners is doubled by 2050, the installed power generation capacity required to meet peak demand will be reduced by 1,300 gigawatts-equivalent to the combined coal-fired power generation in China and India in 2018. Globally, by 2050, if the energy efficiency of air conditioners is doubled, the cost of power generation, transmission and distribution alone can save up to US$2.9 trillion.

It is reported that from July 1st, my country’s new energy efficiency standards for air conditioners, known as “the most stringent in history”, have been implemented. It is reported that the new national standard combines the energy efficiency of the original fixed frequency and inverter air conditioners, and the energy efficiency level has also been expanded from the original 3 to 5 levels.

Experts said that after the upgrade of this standard, the energy efficiency index of inverter air conditioners has increased by about 14%. For fixed frequency air conditioners, such as the original first-class energy efficiency products, if they are evaluated according to the current new version of energy efficiency, they can only reach the new energy efficiency threshold. Level. In other words, after the implementation of the “New National Standard Level 1 Energy Efficiency”, it means that all low-energy-efficiency, high-power-consumption fixed-frequency and level 3 energy-efficiency variable frequency products will face elimination.
